Player Coaches
Brad Gilbert (USA)
With Nick Bollettieri aside, Gilbert is perhaps the best known coach in tennis and one of the most recognisable. He was once described by Andre Agassi as the "greatest coach of all time". As a former tennis professional himself he enjoyed moderate success, but it is perhaps his coaching career since he retired from the game that has made him such a household name. Brad is widely recognised for his expertise in match strategy and in depth knowledge of the game. At the age of 33, without having formally retired from the Tour, he agreed to coach Andre Agassi. The partnership started to see immediate rewards as Agassi leapt from 30 in the world to number one within the first twelve months of their player coach relationship. The partnership would continue for eight years from 1994 to 2002 and is the joint most successful relationship in Open era history alongside Tony Roche's period as a coach of Ivan Lendl. Gilbert then went on to coach Andy Roddick who won the 2003 US Open under Gilbert's influence but parted at the end of 2004 after an acrimonious split. Roddick's form has taken a noticeable downturn since the split which is a further testament to Gilbert's expertise as a coach. In July 2006, Gilbert announced he would be working with the LTA and Andy Murray. After sixteen months working together and reaching a career high of number 8, Gilbert and Murray parted company. Since their split Gilbert has continued to work with the LTA and has concentrated on working with Britain's number two Alex Bodganovic.
