Player Coaches
Larry Stefanki (USA)
The former professional tennis player is considered one of the best coaches in the game and has worked with a number of leading players such as John McEnroe, Marcelo Ríos, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Tim Henman. There are very few coaches in the game who have achieved success with more than one player, yet Stefanki's resume is up their with the very best. It was under Stefanki's guidance that Marcelo Rios and Yevgeny Kafelnikov achieved their world number one rankings. When Henman split from long-time coach David Felgate it was hoped his partnership with Stefanki would take his game to a new level and transform into a genuine Grand Slam contender. However, the results achieved under Stefanki's guidance were mediocre and it is the only blip on his coaching record to date. In June 2006, the American was hired as the coach of Fernando González and immediately the relationship started to produce results. Under Stefanki, the Chilean reached back-to-back finals in Vienna, the Madrid Masters and Basel in 2006. In 2007 he reached his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in which he eased pasted the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, James Blake, Rafa Nadal and Tommy Haas before losing to Roger Federer. His success saw him reach a career high of number five in the world rankings. Stefanki's methods are based on an excellent knowledge of game and a strategy which relies on percentage tennis, a method instilled in Fernando González and Tim Henman.
